LASIK eye surgery is the most popular laser refractive procedure used to treat vision problems. LASIK, also known as laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is an alternative to contact lenses or eyeglasses. During LASIK surgery, a specialised laser is used to precisely modify the shape of the cornea, the dome-shaped transparent tissue located at the front of the eye, in order to improve vision.
In eyes with proper vision, the cornea precisely bends (refracts) light onto the retina at the back of the eye. However, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism cause improper light bending, resulting in hazy vision. In addition to correcting vision with glasses or contact lenses, corneal reshaping can also produce the required refraction.
LASIK surgery may correct one of the following vision conditions:
When the cornea is too steeply curved or when the eyeball is slightly longer than average, light rays focus ahead of the retina and give inaccurate distant vision. Objects in the vicinity can be seen clearly, but those in the distance cannot.
When the cornea is excessively flat or the eyeball is shorter than usual, light focuses behind the retina instead of on it. This results in blurry near- and sometimes far-sightedness.
Astigmatism is caused by the irregular flattening or bending of the cornea, which disrupts the focus of both near and far vision. The majority of individuals considering LASIK already wear glasses or contact lenses. If LASIK or another similar refractive procedure is a viable option for you, your eye doctor will discuss it with you.
The following are LASIK's advantages:
1.Am I an appropriate candidate for LASIK or Contoura vision correction?
Typically, a qualified candidate will be at least 18 years old, have stable vision for the past year, be free of pregnancy, certain corneal and retinal diseases, and be in good health overall.
2. How soon will I be able to return to work, drive, or participate in sports?
The day following lasik surgery, the majority of patients drive and return to work.
3. Is the procedure safe?
LASik surgery is reportedly quite safe. In the past decade, nearly 10 million instances have been executed worldwide.
4. Does the vision correction last forever?
Once the cornea has been modified, it is typically permanent. In the vast majority of stabilised corrected eyes, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are permanently fixed.
